What is bucket list planning?

To enjoy your life sustainably and have some things that you look forward to doing in the future, you can utilize bucket list planning.

What do you truly want to do at some point in your life, sooner and/or later? Once you have an idea of these deep desires, you can start planning your finances so that these numbers become helpful to you in achieving your dreams, not hindrances.

Because with finance, there’s a lot of ‘shoulds’, [like], “I should want to have my house paid off, I should have a million dollars saved in my 401K …” We do this a lot and it makes us feel bad about ourselves because those ‘shoulds’ aren’t necessarily what you want.

Lisa Sakai

Of course, there is a balance between what is necessary and what you want to do. Find that balance instead of living your life entirely from a “should” perspective.

What are your goals?

A reason why many people feel like failures when it comes to achieving their dreams is because they have been talking about it for years, but haven’t gotten any closer to it.

This may be because they have been trying to fulfill one financial “should” after the other, instead of looking at their personal priorities and trying to structure their life in a way that fulfills their obligations while simultaneously allowing them to enjoy their passions.

[The mistake that people make is] not viewing money as a form of self-care, which it is. Using your money in appropriate ways that actually benefit you and make you happy is a form of self-care.

Lisa Sakai

If you want to save for short-term goals, opt for high-yield savings accounts.

They offer a good interest rate on your money, so this is a good place to start saving for short-term goals and things that you might not want to take a big risk on.

How to start putting your plan together

Start with one goal. Choose one goal that you have, maybe to save a fixed amount this year, or to prepare for an adventure. Whatever it may be, keep these things in mind:

  • You are not going to jump from saving no money to saving almost $1000 a month. It is a slower process, so start with whatever you can start with, whether it’s $10 or $50.
  • Start small and build slowly. If you save $20 one month, then challenge yourself to save $30 the next, and so on.
  • Don’t forget about your goal, keep it front of mind and make sure to prioritize it each month.
  • Be mindful of how you talk about yourself around money.
  • Write the goal down at least five times a week which creates a space for you to hold yourself accountable to taking action.

Actively [focus] on one goal and writing it down consistently keeps your mind actively engaged on, “How can I accomplish this?”

Lisa’s main takeaway advice for listeners

Just start! Focus on a goal, figure out a basic timeline with small, actionable steps, and take that first one, even if it’s as small as $20.

When you take control of your money, you can structure your life in an amazing and personal way, instead of feeling like your money is controlling you.
